Hi Mohamed,
I enjoyed reading your post, but I can't disagree with you more on the views you've presented. I believe that teaching foreign languages to children, English and other languages, is extremely beneficial in the personal growth of the child, and of a nation as a whole.
The exposure to a language allows exposure of other cultures, other sciences, other knowledges that may or may not be available in one's native language (be that Arabic or any other language). The learning of a Lingua-Franca like English is even of higher importance to increasing the potential of a child: it allows them more years to acquire the language more proficiently, which allows them more credibility when they intend to use it: A conference presenter who is pronouncing all the Ps as Bs and all the Vs as Fs is much less likely to get the respect of the audience than one who is presenting using a close-to-perfect language. The learning of a foreign language may no longer be optimal when a child is of middle-school age, but the child at the time also has other optimizing circumstances: A 12 year old does not have any responsibilities to speak of, or worries to speak of - this is when the child has the time to learn the language. If we waited till adulthood to teach people languages, people will be "too busy", or too tired from studying by the time they get to the opportunity of learning the language.
A religion teacher may not need to speak English, but suppose there is something in the news about the Arab world or about the religion being taught, and which is not fully presented in Arabic: The teacher would be limited in what she/he can offer her/his students in commentary about this event, since she/he can not have access to all the information about the event.
That is a special case, for the most part, people from all professions: Engineers, Scientists, Doctors, Pilots, Technicians, Linguists etc, all need to communicate with people from other countries, and to read manuals and books and journal articles presented in other languages... So if 90% of people will end up having to learn the language anyway, why not introduce it to all 100% of them early enough to make it easier on them to acquire the basics, while their existence still revolves around learning only (junior highschool and highschool)... If people are "forgetting" what they learned by the time they're in college, then the teaching methodology was not appropriate, and the teachers need to be trained better in giving their students a learning experience that will last. In fact, I beleive people should start learning said languages even earlier, perhaps even in childhood, like schools do in Lebanon (where they have a foreign language, either French or English, from kindergarten).
:) In any case, it was pleasant reading your post, thanks for tagging me!

Hi Sarah, Thank you very much for your comment.

I wish to address certain issues you have raised.

First, foreign languages are not a prerequisite for success, nor are they always necessary for creativity. You live in the US and can see for yourself that many excellent American scientists are monolingual. In addition, exposure to other cultures can breed complacency since everything can come from outside. If you have textbooks written in English, why do you need to have them in Arabic?

Second, adults can learn any language successfully in about a year. They can master all aspects of the foreign language, except perhaps for phonology. Early exposure helps if it occurs in a natural setting. Such a setting cannot be provided in most schools in the Arab world. Moreover, being busy does not hinder anyone from learning a foreign language if one really needs it.

Third, if something really important about the religions of the Arabs is said in a different language, we will know about. The Danish cartoons were in Danish, but we all knew about them. Translation is still alive.

Fourth, not all doctors and scientists communicate with the outside world. The majority of people live in their countries. It is actually a minority of people who deal with the outside world. The rest rarely do. So why then should we impose foreign languages on everyone if by the end of the day only a handful of them will use those languages?

Fifth, the Arab world is huge enough to allow most of its inhabitants to function almost exclusively in Arabic. That’s the nature of large cultures. They tend be insular.

Finally, if someone has difficulties pronouncing Vs and Ps, he/she should not present in English. If he/she has something important to say, people will listen no matter how bad his/her pronunciation is. Furthermore, people can always find other ways to disrespect others, even if they speak their language perfectly (Have you seen Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay?)

Thank you again for your stimulating comment!
